State leaders are celebrating the four-day operation to combat human trafficking in Southern California that led to the rescue as well as the arrests of seven people. Dubbed Operation Safe Return, federal, state and local law enforcement agencies fanned out across the Greater Los Angeles area and nearby states including Arizona and Nevada in search of missing children.During the operation, which took place from March 2…
Trade through the Middle East’s biggest port has been hit hard since Iran began its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz – one of the world’s most important global shipping routes. Oil prices rose to a peak of $120 (£89.2) a barrel on Monday and experts have told the BBC they are worried about a big drop in food coming into the region if the US-Israel war with Iran continues. BBC correspondent Nick Beake reports from Dubai’s Port of Jebel Ali, which has been in the firing line since Iran responded to US-Israeli strikes by attacking Gulf states with links…
By Chris Snellgrove | Published 29 seconds ago Every now and then, I watch a double feature of movies completely by accident. Not that long ago, for example, I stumbled on two films featuring drag queens fighting undead monsters. The first was Queens of the Dead, which featured some bigger names (like muscle mommy Katy O’Brian) and was directed by George Romero’s daughter, Tina. The second was Slay (2024), a low-budget, direct-to-streaming video featuring a handful of RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants I had never heard of. Considering that it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, featured a couple of my…
Overnight on March 7, Israel bombed fuel depots outside of Tehran, Iran’s capital city. Playwright and filmmaker Homayoun Ghanizadeh woke up the next day to black smoke and carnage. What follows is his account of a private citizen trying to maintain some normalcy in the face of a relentless bombing campaign. I remember that before I went to sleep, Trump’s toys had bombed Tehran’s oil depots. My father calls American military equipment Trump’s toys. I like his fantasy and the way he describes Trump’s mental landscape. I wake up and sit in bed. My phone clock must be broken, because…

Devin Haney has provided an update on a potential rematch with long-term rival Ryan Garcia. The two men met back in April 2024, in what was set to be a defence of Haney’s WBC super-lightweight crown. That changed when Garcia missed weight, though the bout proceeded as a non-title contest, and resulted in what many perceived as a huge upset. That was because Garcia dropped his rival multiple times on his way to a majority decision victory, though it was later changed to a no contest after ‘King Ry’ subsequently failed a drugs test. That led to Haney suing Garcia for battery, fraud…
A weak jobs report, and much more importantly the related and absurd firing of the BLS commissioner on August 1, have dominated the recent news. But the firing is a topic for a subsequent blog. For now let’s step back and take a look at the broad U.S. employment/growth picture. Employment gains have evidently slowed in recent months, but job destruction as indicated by initial claims has not risen. Initial claims are a key component of the ADS index of real economic activity, and ADS recently and currently continues to indicate «typical», or «average», growth. So: so far so good, but keep your eye on initial…
Iranian Australian Patriots Association co-founder Minoo Taghizadeh said she is “absolutely heartbroken” by the treatment of the Iranian women’s football team at Sydney Airport, in which the travelling party was whisked from the tarmac onto a bus with a police escort.Minoo and co-founder husband Maani Taghizadeh were highly critical of the role that federal police played in the transfer, claiming the officers “kicked us out” of the terminal following a tense standoff after the group was driven from the plane.Iranian Australian Patriots Association co-founder Minoo Taghizadeh (third from left), Maani Taghizadeh (second from left) and other supporters of the women’s…
