The unexpected tornadoes in Kansas followed a similar, much-scrutinized event in Michigan last month, when a tornado watch was not issued for southern Michigan and four people died. NWS offices did issue warnings when tornadoes were imminent, however. Democratic Sens. Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin of Michigan sent a letter asking NWS Director Ken Graham why a watch was not issued, whether short staffing played a role and how the NWS planned to improve tornado alerts. A spokesperson said the NWS had written a response directly to the senators but did not share it with NBC News. Although the NWS…

Razing Hell / April 15, 2026 It’s not the kitschy White House ballroom—it’s logistics warehouses converted to ICE detention centers. Ad Policy This is not designed for people.(Getty) This article appears in the May 2026 issue, with the headline “ICE Palaces.” When Congress voted to expand the budget of Immigration and Customs Enforcement by $170 billion last July, it was inevitable that some of that money would be spent reshaping the built environment toward new and more sinister ends. Sure enough, by the end of 2025, ICE released plans to convert seven massive logistics warehouses scattered across the United States…
The California Supreme Court ordered attorney and former law school dean John Eastman disbarred on Wednesday for his role aiding the Trump administration’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election. The court ordered Eastman’s name be “stricken from the roll of attorneys” and that he pay $5,000 to the State Bar of California. Eastman’s attorney, Randall A. Miller, told the Associated Press that the court’s decision “departs from long-standing United States Supreme Court precedent protecting First Amendment rights, especially in the attorney discipline context.” Miller did not immediately return an after-hours phone call seeking comment from The Times.State Bar Chief Trial…
