OAKLAND — Betty Yee knows what people are thinking. She’s heard what they’ve said and read the many emails she’s gotten. The former state controller has been running for California governor longer than just about anybody in the cheek-by-jowl field. And yet the Democrat is bumping along near the bottom, a blip in polls and a laggard in the money chase. But no, Yee said, she has no intention of quitting the race, as she’s been urged, and no fear that, by staying in, she’ll help two Republicans advance to November’s runoff, locking Democrats out of the governor’s office for the first time since…

Even before February 28, the reasons for Donald Trump’s imploding approval rating were abundantly clear: untrammeled corruption and personal enrichment to the tune of billions of dollars during an affordability crisis, a foreign policy guided only by his own derelict sense of morality, and the deployment of a murderous campaign of occupation, detention, and deportation on American streets.  Now an undeclared, unauthorized, unpopular, and unconstitutional war of aggression against Iran has spread like wildfire through the region and into Europe. A new “forever war”—with an ever-increasing likelihood of American troops on the ground—may very well be upon us.   As we’ve…

Yves here. Michael Hudson describes long form how the US has forcefully repudiated the principles of the 1648 Peace of Westphalia, reaffirmed in the the 1945 United Nations Charter, that nation-states should be not be invaded or coerced save via UN-approved actions. As readers know well, the US was never a good actor in its better days, as its 1953 overthrow of Iran’s democratically elected president Mohammad Mosaddegh, followed. Nevertheless, we maintained enough in the way of pretenses so as to be able to conduct diplomacy. We’ve now moved into unabashed might makes right, over-the-top uses of force, and astonishment…

Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally., the new album from Harry Styles and therefore one of the biggest pop events of 2026 so far, is out today (March 6). Styles recently told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe of the song: “It’s actually quite a lonely song…

T he Founders missed Frankenstein by 30 years and the Mar-a-Lago face — that overworked, unnatural, unmistakably altered look — by a few hundred more. But they may have recognized the presidency we have now: a grotesque concentration of authority in the hands of Donald Trump. The modern executive branch is a creature made monstrous by what George Washington called “unprincipled men.” The Framers had another name for them: Congress.  If the presidency seems dangerous, don’t fixate on Article II, the part of the Constitution laying out the powers of the presidency. The office expands because Article I permits it.…
