    Alphonso Smith Jr. left behind a legacy on the football field that stretched from Wake Forest to the NFL. Now, his loved ones and fans are mourning the former standout cornerback after heartbreaking news about the 40-year-old surfaced Wednesday.

    Alphonso Smith Jr.’s Final Post Revealed His Inner Struggles

    According to TMZ, Alphonso Smith Jr. reportedly died by suicide Wednesday at a housing community in Florida. The former NFL cornerback was 40 years old. News of his death has since prompted an outpouring of reactions as those who knew him and followed his football career remember his impact both on and off the field.

    Before his death, Alphonso shared a deeply emotional final Facebook post that appeared to reflect the emotional struggles he was experiencing. “Do not cry for me! I tried everything in my power to fight the demons behind the ones that someone put into ME! I did not want to be that WAY! I know I have disappointed so many folks. This is a DEMON in me! But not only me! It’s EVERYONE! I have HURT so many! I needed help & did not get it!” Alphonso repeatedly apologized in the post, described himself as a “coward,” and referenced abuse he said he experienced as a young boy. He ended the message by writing, “I am SORRY! THIS IS IT!”

    Alphonso Smith Jr.’s Football Journey

    Alphonso made his mark at Wake Forest University from 2004 to 2008, earning All-American honors during his senior season before being inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame in 2022. The Denver Broncos selected him in the 2009 NFL Draft, and he was later traded to the Detroit Lions, where he spent three seasons before ending his career after the 2012 campaign. Across 42 NFL games, Alphonso recorded 88 tackles and eight interceptions.

    In late 2025, more NFL players began opening up about their mental health struggles, bringing increased attention to the pressures athletes can face behind the scenes. Marshawn Kneeland’s death has further highlighted that conversation, particularly as details surrounding his final hours continue to emerge. The tragedy is also renewing attention on the emotional challenges professional athletes may experience away from the spotlight.
