Over the course of 8½ hours, a Northern California nurse hopped between bars during a Friday evening while sailing on a Carnival Cruise vacation. As the vessel toured Baja California, Diana Sanders of Vacaville sampled tequila shots — 14 or 15 in total — from six ship taverns, tequileras and pubs, according to court documents.Shortly after her final drink, a “swaying, stammering” Sanders stumbled down a set of stairs, according to court documents. She said she suffered severe injuries and filed a lawsuit against Florida-based Carnival Corp., contending the ship’s crew was negligent and overserved drinks.A Miami-Dade County jury agreed with…
Activism / April 17, 2026 While it’s nice that politicians are finally talking about the “affordability crisis,” working folks are wondering: Where have you been? Ad Policy A doorman hoses down a sidewalk outside a building in the Upper East Side neighborhood of New York City, on April 14, 2026.( Michael Nagle / Bloomberg via Getty Images) In my early 20s, I worked in a courthouse. Courthouses aren’t as exciting as you might think; real trials rarely happen and mostly papers are filed, data is entered, callers are put on hold. Courtrooms are a depressing parade of people who have…

And once again they’re excited about global trade imbalances. Not so long ago, trade-watchers were optimistic that these were fading. The IMF itself put out a report entitled Imbalances Receding in mid-2024. So how does that report look now? Well, not great, according to CFR senior fellow Brad Setser. He went on the FT’s Economics Show…
China is rapidly building up space-warfare capabilities and by 2040 will be conducting low-level warfare powered by advanced technology aimed at weakening the United States, according to a new Space Force report. The report, made public earlier this week, is called “Future Operating Environment 2040” and describes a dark vision of conflict with Beijing below the level of declared war in the next 14 years. “By 2040, the operating environment is marked by ongoing, hard-to-detect competition below the level of declared war,” the report stated. “The line between peace and conflict has become unclear amid continuous electromagnetic activity, cyberoperations, and…

Donald Trump’s administration has no plans to stop browbeating its critics with incorrect and sacrilegious invocation of biblical teachings. On Thursday morning, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a lengthy diatribe barely disguised as a sermon in which he quoted fake scripture from the Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction, and later berated the press on biblical grounds during a press briefing, comparing the president to Jesus. Hegseth, who for weeks now has been invoking Christian scripture to justify the administration’s disastrous war against Iran, hosted his regular worship service and sermon at the Pentagon on Wednesday. During his speech, he quoted…
We’re now just a couple weeks away from Pompeii // Utility, the new joint album from Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE, and SURF GANG. It’s structured as a pair of albums, one from Earl and one from MIKE, with SURF GANG working on both projects and the two rappers making appearance on their non-native side of the LP. “Chicago” is one of the Earl, tracks, though, where Mike sits it out. The song was shared today (April 16), alongside a video. The song and visual are under two minutse long, and it features green-screen footage of Earl and his associates chilling out…
The NFL Draft is here, and the Fantasy landscape is about to change dramatically. Some draft picks will work in our favor, while others will cause chaos. It’s the same drill every season, and it’s fun to react to the rookies. Prior to the NFL Draft, we have our wish list for each AFC West team — pros and cons — of what we want to see happen. While the obvious choice is upgraded offensive lines across the board, we won’t get into that here. We also want to avoid as many crowded backfields as possible. Ultimately, we want situations…
Netanyahu wants Israel to become the hegemonic force in the Middle East. This is the strategic significance of the “Greater Israel” project, which is then shrouded in religious rhetoric. The rapprochement between Iran and its Arab and Muslim-majority neighbours preceding the war and the rising Sunni military bloc was the most significant obstacle. A key purpose of the war launched against Iran was to break it. Israel’s project has been expansionist since its founding—as seen in Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon—and its survival as a state depends on being able to maintain this project. It is uncertain where it ends, but…
Europe has «maybe 6 weeks or so (of) jet fuel left,» the head of the International Energy Agency said Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press, warning of possible flight cancellations «soon» if oil supplies remain blocked by the Iran war.IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol painted a sobering picture of the global repercussions of what he called «the largest energy crisis we have ever faced» stemming from the pinch-off of oil, gas and other vital supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.»In the past there was a group called ‘Dire Straits.’ It’s a dire strait now, and it is going…
