WASHINGTON — In recent weeks, several social media influencers have popped up in online feeds touting the California gubernatorial campaign of billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer. Some complain about the price of gasoline. I know Tom Steyer is a…

Archaeologists working in Egypt have discovered a remarkable combination of Homeric epic and Egyptian ritual: a 2,000-year-old mummy with a papyrus fragment of the “Iliad” sealed in a clay packet outside its wrappings. It is the first time a literary work has been found playing a functional, spiritual role in the mummification process. And it suggests that for a Roman-era Egyptian, the “Iliad” — specifically some lines from Book 2’s “Catalogue of Ships” — was perhaps as crucial for navigating the afterlife as a magical spell.“The find is incredibly significant, primarily for the discovery of such a papyrus with Greek literary…

This story is part of Image’s May Momentum issue, which looks at art as a sport and sport as an art. I’m haunted by the perfection of Roxy board shorts from the early aughts. As a teen surfer girl in El Porto, they were my holy grail. In those years, all the cool surf brands made cute surf clothing, but the emphasis was decidedly more on the aesthetic than the function, which was a bummer when it came to, you know, surfing. Roxy board shorts changed that, especially the particular style I’m thinking of: slightly longer to actually prevent thigh…
In the opening scene of Homer’s The Odyssey, Zeus complains to his favored daughter Athena that mortals love to blame the gods for their problems, when they themselves are the source of most of their troubles. “Lo, how men blame the gods! From us, they say, spring troubles. But through their own perversity, and more than is their due, they meet with sorrow,” cries the lord of Olympus. Mankind, through its own folly, obsessions, impulses, and fallibility, wreaked havoc on itself. From personal anguish, to interpersonal conflict, to era-defining wars and atrocities, the lament transcends the epic itself. It’s been…
