Five years ago, Oklahoma oil regulators took on a project with an impressive name: the Source of Truth. State officials wanted a comprehensive database capturing all vital information about the more than 11,000 wells in Oklahoma that shoot the toxic byproduct of oil production back underground. I’d heard about this project from several people during the 18 months I had spent reporting on the growing number of cases where oilfield wastewater blasted out of old wells, known as purges, after being injected underground at high pressures. State employees also referenced the project in internal communications that I received after filing…

Last week, I did a couple of interviews with Brian Edwards-Tiekert of KPFA: one about what the latest BLS employment data is telling us, and one about the Fed’s decision to lower interest rates by a quarter point – in part in response to that data. Having given this some thought for the interviews, I thought it might be worth putting something down in a blog post. I should stress: I am not a labor economist, or an expert on labor-market data. If I add any value here, it’s from applying a more systematic Keynesian perspective. I also know there…
The Virginia man accused of laying pipe bombs at the Republican and Democratic national headquarters on the eve of Jan. 6, 2021, said he deserves the same clemency for his actions that rioters at the U.S. Capitol received. Attorneys for suspect Brian Cole said their client fits the narrative the White House used to pardon the roughly 1,500 people charged in the incident more than five years ago. Mr. Cole’s legal team said his alleged actions were based on issues with the 2020 election that motivated those same people during the Capitol attack. “Brian Cole’s conduct is so inextricably and…
WASHINGTON — Republicans are aggressively touting a popular provision in their sweeping SAVE America Act to overhaul elections nationwide: requiring photo identification to vote. It’s a policy long opposed by Democrats in Congress, who liken it to nefarious Jim Crow-era laws aimed at preventing African Americans from voting. But that message is increasingly falling flat with the American public, including Black voters, as photo IDs are increasingly required for common activities, like flying.A Pew Research Center poll in August tested a variety of election rules and found that 83% of U.S. adults support “requiring all voters to show government-issued photo identification to…

Team USA and Venezuela needed to win low-scoring affairs to punch their tickets into Tuesday’s World Baseball Classic final. However, Derek Jeter believes that the championship matchup might be a bit different. After the two winning sides scored a combined six runs in their semifinal victories, Jeter predicted that the USA-Venezuela matchup will be a high-scoring affair. «There’s no easy outs in either lineup,» Jeter said on FS1’s postgame show following Venezuela’s 4-2 win over Italy on Tuesday. «Every pitch is important. Sometimes when you’re a pitcher and navigating through a lineup, you have a few guys where you’re able to breathe.…
