Pete Hegseth, to his credit, understands one truth about the world: the military’s job is to kill people.  Hegseth, the newly rebranded “Secretary of War,” is obsessed with showcasing clean-cut troops trained to do just that. He refers to it as “lethality,” a word that he used twice in his roughly hour-long State of the Force speech on Wednesday, which laid out his vision for this new, more-violent military: a force of fit, unified “warfighters,” unburdened by the bureaucracy and norms of the past. “No more diversity quotas, no more gender pronouns, no more identity months,” Hegseth said, pacing back…

A FlyDubai co-pilot who earlier this week allegedly made a violent attempt to crash a passenger aircraft before being subdued by passengers and other crew members was previously fired from a position with Oman Air for holding «extremist views,» multiple sources told CBS News on Friday.  The flight Wednesday from Dubai to Tel Aviv was approaching Israel when the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the flight captain and attempted to crash the aircraft, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said. The captain was able to fight off the co-pilot long enough to unlock the cockpit door. Passengers then overpowered the co-pilot, and two off-duty…

The next generation of blockbuster obesity drugs isn’t trying to replace GLP-1 medicines.Instead, drugmakers are developing treatments that can complement existing drugs and push weight loss further, or offer new options for potentially millions of people who may not get enough benefit from GLP-1s. That’s the early potential of a new slate of injections, pills, and combination regimens targeting the amylin pathway, which involves a hormone released in the pancreas alongside insulin that helps regulate hunger and fullness. Amylin gives Eli Lilly, Novo and several other companies another biological lever to pull in treating obesity and Type 2 diabetes, either as…

weapons of mass decentralization– There’s a lot of discussion presently about the end of the Bronze Age and what that might tell us about what feels to many like the end of an age or even civilization itself in our time. Patrick Fitzsimmons, a postdoctoral fellow at Penn, is interested in how some technological advancements can be a centripetal force among humans, pulling people together into larger groups ruled by a strong center, while other technologies exert a centrifugal force, dissolving large empires and leaving smaller groupings in their place. Transporting tin [to make bronze] required a trader willing to…

A 21-year-old man wore a light sensor on a necklace for a month and logged every sneeze. Over 30 days, he recorded 82 sneezing episodes, about 2.7 a day. In most of them, the light around him had just jumped sharply. The man is Lucien Bickerstaff, first author of the study in F1000Research and its only participant. He has the photic sneeze reflex, and he and colleagues at the Technical University of Munich and the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Germany, set out to measure it in daily life instead of relying on what people remember.
