America’s government has become a masterclass in deliberate, costly failure. You can order dinner, hail a car, transfer money across the country, trash a pundit, praise a friend, and run a business from your phone in seconds. The private sector figured this out years ago. Yet the second you deal with your own government, you step into a dysfunctional time machine: endless paperwork, overloaded websites that crash, multi-hour hold times, lines that stretch for blocks, and approvals that crawl at the speed of 1985.

The White House said Friday that it planned to cut $810 million in bipartisan, congressionally approved funding, spurring criticism from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. The executive branch would effectively send the funds back to Congress using so-called pocket rescissions, a rare budgetary tactic that the Trump administration has used before to negate congressionally allocated spending. The rejected funding affects several programs and agencies serving immigrants, minority groups and Department of Health and Human Services research programs. The administration has argued that while the law gives Congress a 45-day period to accept or reject a White House decision…

A Colorado manufacturer of a popular brand of marijuana vapes warned dispensaries last week that it is recalling products due to contamination by methylene chloride, a chemical the Environmental Protection Agency has sought to ban for most uses because it can cause cancer. The recall comes amid a protracted delay in state implementation of expanded testing procedures that would have detected methylene chloride and other solvents that pose health risks. The manufacturer, StayCon, voluntarily flagged 49 of its products, some of which first went up on dispensary shelves more than a year and a half ago. The recalled items include…

The first victim knew Castro, the second victim did not, Gadeberg said.“The fact that he would progress to what appears to be a total stranger is certainly concerning and suggests there may not be a conventional motive…
