September 11th is the most solemn day on the U.S. calendar. The terrorist attacks that left nearly 3,000 people dead 25 years ago are still fresh in the minds of many, and no occasion calls for a greater show of reverence and respect, especially from the nation’s commander-in-chief. Unfortunately, America’s current commander-in-chief, Donald Trump, has a tough time showing reverence and respect for anything other than himself. It’s been especially true with regard to 9/11, as the president reminded everyone on Tuesday during an event intended to honor first responders and victims of the attacks. “I took the whole crew…

Ben Shelton messed up.Sure, the U.S. tennis star advanced to his second U.S. Open semifinal in epic fashion, knocking off defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set marathon that did not end until 3:33 a.m. ET Wednesday. It was during his on-court interview afterward, however, that Shelton committed a bit of a faux pas while discussing the match that ended later than any other in tournament history.“I’m just hoping that my best friend and my sister over there don’t have to be at work at 6 a.m. in three hours,” Shelton said following the 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6…

The reporter may have misheard the comment, or maybe the person being quoted actually said it, or something odd happened in the editing process.Whatever: This is what appeared in the Feb. 20, 1985 edition of the Oakland Tribune, quoting a UC Berkeley professor about a protest against immigration sweeps in the Bay Area.“This probably won’t stop the Iron Ass [federal government] from making raids in the Eastbay.”“Iron Ass” is how someone might hear the acronym INS, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the forerunner to ICE.And now, 40 years on, it fits right into the kind of angry, derisory language many…

“South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone renamed their long-running animated TV show “South America” in a not-so-subtle dig at the White House, big tech and the pair’s own corporate bosses, the producers said Tuesday. And by Wednesday morning, Comedy Central’s website listed the show under its new MAGA-mocking title, “South America.”President Donald Trump has long demanded that well-known geographic locations be changed to U.S.-centric titles, with his latest call to flip Lake Ontario to “Lake America” — name changes that Google and Apple have agreed to on their map apps.“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google,…

Western Michigan junior Broc Lowry looks to pass during the season-opening game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026. After a confusing end to the Western Michigan versus Michigan contest, it sort of felt like the dust was mostly settled on the officiating nightmare. The Big Ten explained their reasoning for adding the second back; the MAC agreed with their findings, and Western Michigan handled the controversy with an abundance of class.Regardless of whether AP voters treated this game as a loss, the Wolverines were removed from the top 25, and the Broncos received some…

Canada is «discriminating» against US businesses by restricting American goods while not doing the same to the same products from other countries, the White House said when announcing the new import restrictions on Tuesday. Some products, like whey and non-alcoholic beer, have been banned from import entirely, while tariffs have been further hiked for others, including cheeses and motorboats.Washington has targeted «significant industries» for Canada, including its politically influential dairy businesses, said economics lecturer Scott French from the University of New South Wales in Australia.Trump has previously argued that Canada’s system – which has production quotas, set pricing, and import limits…

Before I joined ProPublica in 2021, I had spent a year writing about a Georgia prison physician named Carlo Musso, one of the rare doctors who’d openly talked about his role in lethal injections. After he stepped away from that work, I wanted to know who replaced him, so I filed open records requests for documents that would shed light on that.  The role Musso held is so controversial that more than a dozen states have made it illegal to disclose the names of those involved with lethal injections. Georgia is among them. The state has gone to great lengths…

FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga premieres September 8th on FX and Hulu and we’re pretty darned hyped about it. The series digs into one of the most potent chapters in hip-hop history, dropping into the golden sunlit streets of ’90s LA to capture West Coast rap’s come-up. To celebrate, we linked up with West Coast rapper Kalan.FrFr for a documentary on the origins of G-Funk that we’re calling the definitive story of How LA Found Its Sound. This isn’t your typical talking-head sit-down, though. We went past simple archival footage for a Bourdain-style documentary that follows Kalan through the…

Image by Farknot from EnvatoCancer, heart disease, and arthritis are big problems for those who suffer from them, society as a whole, and health establishments. Most of us already know heart disease and cancer are the two leading causes of mortality in the US because a family member, friend, or loved one likely suffers from one or the other. Driving these deadly diseases are a whole range of factors from genetics to lifestyle choices, but often underreported is the link between chronic inflammation and a whole host of common conditions. What Exactly is Chronic Inflammation? As the chronic element suggests, this is…
