In July, the Pew Research Center found that for the first time in roughly two decades of global polling, the world now views China more favorably than the United States. The sentiment was not universal, but in 25 of the 36 countries surveyed this year, the percentage of respondents who gave favorable marks to China exceeded that for the United States, including several close U.S. allies. Some analysts have taken these findings as confirmation that the golden era of American soft power is over and China is ascendant. According to them, Trump’s policies on tariffs, aid, and allies have eroded…

Top U.S. Postal Service officials tasked with issuing new regulations on mail voting expressed concerns in internal meetings about how the rules they were drafting could delay or block ballots from reaching large swaths of eligible voters for the upcoming midterms, but the rules moved forward anyway, ProPublica has learned. The revelations about the discussions, from someone familiar with the rulemaking process, come as a separate anonymous federal employee filed a whistleblower disclosure with U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, warning that the new system is untested and error-prone, and could lead to mass disenfranchisement in the upcoming election. The whistleblower described…

Three laboratory made opioids derived from kratom became Schedule I controlled substances on August 26, making it a federal crime to manufacture, sell or possess them. The products most consumers actually encounter in gas stations and smoke shops, concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine gummies, tablets, and shots, were not covered by that order and remain unscheduled. The temporary scheduling order covers mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15, and MGM-16. It runs through August 26, 2028, with a possible one-year extension. A separate proposal covering 7-OH itself above a concentration threshold has not produced an order as of publication. For households, the gap matters because the packaging does not…

By Chris Snellgrove | Published 15 seconds ago Do you remember those weird hidden image pictures from the ‘90s? Like the one in Mallrats where, if you stare at it long enough, you can see a special picture within the picture? Believe it or not, Star Trek is a bit like those pictures: stare at the various series long enough, and you start to see weird patterns that you never noticed were there. For example, the number 47 appears many times in shows like The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager for seemingly no reason. There was a reason,…
