LAEM CHABANG, Thailand — The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier arrived Wednesday at a port in eastern Thailand, where thousands of U.S. sailors and Marines are disembarking for the first time in more than 280 days after a record-setting deployment in the Middle East. The toll of the more than nine-month deployment, most of it spent supporting military operations in the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, was visible on the carrier as it pulled into Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi province. Paint has worn off and the metal underneath is rusted on the 1,092-foot warship, which is one of the largest…

Politics / September 1, 2026 The historic political failures of the GOP have even created openings in reliably red states. Ad Policy Participants at last month’s general-election kickoff rally for Michigan Democrats.(Emily Elconin / Bloomberg via Getty Images) Stop me if you’ve heard this before: The Democrats have recruited a series of their top-choice Senate candidates to take on Republicans in double-digit Trump states on a pretty brutal map. The unpopular president is mired in scandal, and because GOP primary voters picked a series of creepy MAGA quislings as their nominees, hopes are high. Democrats look competitive almost everywhere and…

The United States possesses the most formidable submarine force in the world. Its nuclear-powered attack submarines are extraordinarily capable, combining stealth, endurance, sophisticated sensors, long-range guided weapons, and highly trained crews. In a major conflict with China, they would be among the most potent weapons available to the United States. Discussions of a Pacific war therefore routinely assign American submarines prominent roles in destroying Chinese surface ships, attacking logistics, enforcing blockades, conducting intelligence operations, and striking targets ashore. There are good reasons for this confidence. But there is also a serious accounting problem. Military forces are commonly discussed in terms…
